| Agilent Technologies to License Incyte Genomics'
Gene Patent Portfolio and cDNA Clone Sets for the Development of Microarray
Systems Agreement Enables Agilent to Use Incyte's Gene Sequences to Produce Gene Expression Microarrays Palo Alto, CA, January 8, 2001 -- Agilent Technologies Inc. (NYSE: A), a leading provider of innovative technologies for communications and life sciences, and Incyte Genomics Inc. (Nasdaq: INCY), the leading genomic information company, today announced that they have entered into a multi-million dollar non-exclusive licensing agreement for the development and commercialization of gene expression arrays using Incyte's sequence-verified, non-redundant cDNA clone sets. The licensing agreement will allow Agilent to use cDNA clones, isolated and sequenced by Incyte, to develop comprehensive human and animal microarrays to identify critical genes involved in various biological processes. In particular, researchers in pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies can use these arrays to identify new potential drug targets. Incyte will receive royalties on sales of Agilent microarrays developed using Incyte's clone technology. Further financial details of the agreement were not disclosed. The licensing agreement allows Agilent to use Incyte's sequence-verified cDNA clones to develop high quality arrays to perform sensitive and quantitative gene expression analysis. With these arrays, researchers will be able to characterize expression of many thousands of genes at one time and identify gene activity during important biological processes, such as during disease progression and pathology, human growth and development, and in response to drugs or toxins. Researchers using Agilent microarrays will be able to access Incyte's LifeSeq Gene-by-Gene Web site to purchase additional gene sequence information and clones related to Incyte's proprietary genes for use in conducting further research. Genes responsible for these processes often provide the basis for diagnostic markers and can be excellent targets for drug therapies. "We are pleased to be working with Incyte to develop these important cDNA clone arrays which compliment Agilent's custom oligo microarray program," said Barney Saunders, vice president and general manager of Agilent's Bio-Research Solutions Unit. "Now researchers in pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies will have simple easy access to powerful new cDNA microarrays to identify new drug targets that could potentially bring cures or relief for a wide variety of human diseases and conditions, such as cancer, heart disease, Alzheimer's and diabetes.
